Focus on the Student

Level one of the Fluency Course is designed for regular junior high school students in Japan. It assumes that students are also taking English classes at junior high school and possibly also at a cram school or similar.
Students should be able to read simple English in order to follow the course: students who have no experience at all will need some support outside of class, mainly some basic phonics instruction and previewing the class materials.
For students at regular junior high school, it may make sense to start Textbook 1a a couple of months into the year, once students have gotten used to reading and writing simple English.
Please see the sample from Textbook 1a below:
Textbook-1a-Unit-1This is the index, and Unit 1 from Textbook 1a. There are 24 units in total. The first four units are easier, to ease students into the format. Reading texts are 45 words long. Units 5-16 have texts that are 60 words long. Units 17-24 have texts that are 80 words long. At the end of the book there are supplementary materials, including speaking cards and reference pages with translations of the questions used in the course.
